March is Women’s History Month, and at Uma Flowers, we are proud to celebrate. Not just as a woman-led business, but as a team that believes education, community, and intentional care should be at the center of everything we do.
This month gives us a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the progress women have made, honor the contributions that shaped our world, and recommit to the values that guide how we serve our community every single day.

What Is Women’s History Month?
You may know that March is dedicated to celebrating women’s contributions to American history, but the story behind that is one worth understanding.
Before it became a national month-long observance, Women’s History Month started as something much smaller: a weeklong local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women launched it in 1978, deliberately scheduling it around March 8 to align with International Women’s Day.
In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a presidential proclamation making the week-long event a national to-do. He framed the act as helping to fill an education gap: “Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed.”
For nearly half a century, the event has put the contributions of women front and center in classrooms, museums, and other educational spaces. The celebration is wide-ranging and honors women in virtually every professional field and discipline.
From space exploration to agriculture and mathematics to literature, women have blazed trails and left their mark on American progress. Women’s History Month makes sure they are noticed and remembered, and that doors continue to open for women trailblazers.
How to Support Women This Month
If you’re looking for ways to honor the women around you this March, here are a few worth considering.
1. Shop Women-Owned
Women-owned businesses are making real strides in the marketplace, and yet they remain underrepresented in many industries. Make a point to seek out and shop at women-owned businesses in your community this month. You may discover a new favorite boutique, café, or service provider you return to year-round. And your support makes a genuine difference for the people building something from the ground up.
2. Tip and Support Service Workers
A great deal of the labor that keeps daily life running smoothly is performed by women in restaurants, coffee shops, salons, and countless other service environments. That work is often undervalued and under-noticed. Tip generously, express gratitude, and take a moment to recognize the care and effort that goes into the spaces and routines you rely on most.
3. Share and Show Up for Local Events
Civic organizations, colleges, libraries, and museums across the country host Women’s History Month programming throughout March. Art exhibits, film screenings, panel discussions, and lectures all offer ways to learn, engage, and show support. Attend when you can. Share what you learn. Even small participation signals that these events matter to the community.
