Looking to reap the wellness benefits of cannabis without smoking it? Many people find vaping weed is a much more desirable experience and still delivers the desirable effects. Here is a brief guide on how to vape weed to get you off to a good start.
How to Vape Weed – Different Methods & Tools
Vaping weed is a little more complex than simply smoking it, simply because you do have to have tools specifically designed to heat the cannabis to the point of vaporization. You will basically need:
- Cannabis flower
- A grinder
- A vaporizer, either portable or tabletop
- Accessories for cleaning, such as a brush, cotton swabs, and isopropyl alcohol
A Closer Look at Types of Dry Herb Vaporizers
Dry herb vaporizers come in two types: portable vaporizers and desktop or tabletop vaporizers. The primary difference between the two is that the portable version is smaller, battery-operated, and easy to use on the go, whereas a tabletop vaporizer is bigger and usually has to be plugged in to function.
Whether a dry herb vaporizer is portable or more stationary, the two pretty much do the same thing: heat the flower to a vaporizing point so you can inhale the vapors. Of course, there are many variances and features among all dry herb vaporizer products. Some have extensive temperature control options, some hold a substantial amount of cannabis, and some are designed for ease of use.
How to Load a Dry Herb Vaporizer
As a precursor, when you are learning how to vape weed, get familiar with how to properly grind cannabis flower for vaping purposes. Every vaporizer will come along with its own recommendations when it comes to the type of grind it will work best with. Some high-end models even allow you to drop in large pieces of flower bud without grinding at all, but this doesn’t offer the most consistent results. In general, try to achieve a fine to medium grind with mostly uniform pieces.
After grinding the flower to the right consistency, make sure your vaporizer is powered off and fully charged. Open the chamber, and use a small scoop to fill it. Use your finger to lightly pack the cannabis in the chamber. The goal here should be a firm pack but nothing too tight so you don’t compromise the airflow. Once you are satisfied with the pack, close the chamber and turn on your device.
How much weed do I need for vaping?
This can vary depending on the type of vaping device you are using and the size of its specific chamber. In general, most hold somewhere between one-fourth and one-half a gram.
How to Vape Weed Step by Step
Vaping weed is a bit different than smoking it, so doing so can take a little adjustment. For one, vapor does not feel the same when you inhale it into your lungs; it’s not the same temperature and can make you feel a bit like coughing at first. You can control some of this by playing with the heat settings on your device to alter the amount of and temperature of the vapors.
Here is a look at the general steps involved:
- Wait for your vape to reach the proper temperature (between 350 to 400 degrees).
- Place your lips on the mouthpiece loosely.
- Take a few gentle puffs without inhaling to prime the vaporizer.
- Once you’re confident and ready, suck in until the vapor fills your lungs.
- Exhale the vapor.
What is the optimal temperature for vaping cannabis?
The best temperature for vaping dry cannabis is between 350 and 400 degrees, depending on the quality of your vaporizer and the quality of your buds (remember, a solid pack-job goes a long way, too).
When vaping cannabis, try to go for longer, slower inhales. Once the vapor loses its flavor and gets much thinner than when you started, this is a good indicator that the weed in the chamber is ready to be discarded and replaced.
Caring for your Dry Herb Vaporizer
After using your vaporizer, open the chamber and discard the already-vaped cannabis or save it for future use if you prefer. Some people save their already-been-vaped cannabis (ABV weed) and smoke it traditionally to use up any remaining cannabinoids, like THC & CBD. Keep in mind too – with ABV weed, most (if not all) terpenes will be damaged during the vaping process, so it will not as flavorful or potent.
Disassemble your vaporizer and use a brush or cotton swab to sweep out any remaining particles. Then, use a cotton swab soaked in isopropyl alcohol to clean out the interior and mouthpiece well. This ensures the sticky residue from the cannabis does not build up inside the vaporizer and compromise function.
